Option one, proposed here, is to turn off the "autocreate" kernel module when loading madwifi via "autocreate=none". You will then need to make your STA vaps manually with wlanconfig, but reports are that it prevents the drop problem when you create monitor vaps later, even after creating a station vap. Option two, madwifi efforts are now being focused on the OpenHAL derived ath5k driver. Kismet-stable-svn has a device type for this, and from my testing it seems to work well enough in rfmon.
