Stable-devel how has madwifi-ng support.
You MUST bring up the virtual device in monitor mode yourself before running
kismet, ie 

wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode monitor

Kismet will not be able to set a sta or other mode device to monitor mode
itself!
