You've probably left networkmanager running - either networkmanager, wpasupplicant, wicd, or some other network managing daemon is shutting down the monitor interface trying to be helpful; make sure none of them are running.

Alternately, your USB device is crashing - check dmesg for errors - but my bet is it's a network manager problem.
